Ecobank supports Nigerian artists with sustainable art initiative

Ecobank Nigeria has unveiled a new art installation, ‘Kong in a Cage,’ by artist, Toyeeb Ajayi.

According to a statement from the bank on Tuesday, the installation, made entirely from recycled materials, is now on display at the Ecobank Pan African Centre in Lagos.

Ecobank has been fostering sustainability in the country through some of its initiatives like the ‘Get Cash for Plastic Bottles’ campaign, which removed over four million plastic bottles from the streets and drains of Lagos. The bank is also actively involved in tree-planting efforts aimed at preserving and protecting the environment.

Commenting on the sustainable art installation, Managing Director/Regional Executive of Ecobank Nigeria,
Bolaji Lawal emphasised that the installation is part of the bank’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, environmental protection, and the promotion of Nigeria’s creative industries.

He added that the bank remains dedicated to offering a global platform for emerging Nigerian artists, especially in the fields of sustainability and the arts.

Lawal also pointed out that ‘Kong in a Cage’ aligns with Ecobank’s broader mission to promote the creative sector across Africa.

“Our aim is to highlight the incredible talent of Nigerian artists, providing them with opportunities to showcase their work both locally and internationally.

“The creative sector is an essential driver of economic growth, well-being, and global interconnectedness. At Ecobank, we are committed to investing in the future of our youth, helping to shape a brighter future for Nigeria,” he said.

The artist, Toyeeb Ajayi, revealed that ‘Kong in a Cage’ is a commentary on environmental sustainability, with the installation’s use of recycled materials reflecting this theme.

“By employing sustainable materials and practices, this installation does more than just entertain—it prompts a conversation about the intersection of art and environmental stewardship.

“’Kong in a Cage’ is not just an artwork; it’s a dialogue—a visual plea for accountability, responsibility, and a renewed respect for the fragile balance between humanity and nature.

“I encourage everyone to reflect on humanity’s impact on the environment, consider the potential of reclaimed materials, and rethink our relationship with the planet”, Ajayi said.

The work of art will be open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays.

CBN Fines Zenith, First Bank, Globus Bank, Others N1.3 Billion For Not Dispensing Cash

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has fined nine deposit money banks in Nigeria a sum of N150 million each, amounting to N1.350 billion for failing to dispense cash through their Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) during the yuletide season.

According to the apex bank, the sanctioned banks include Fidelity Bank Plc, First Bank Plc, Keystone Bank Plc, Union Bank Plc, Globus Bank Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, and two others.

This is according to a press statement on Tuesday by CBN’s Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Mrs. Hakama Sidi Ali.

The statement read “In a clear message of zero tolerance for cash flow disruptions, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has sanctioned Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) for failing to make Naira notes available through automated teller machines (ATMs), during the yuletide season.

“Each bank was fined N150 million for non-compliance, in line with the CBN’s cash distribution guidelines, following spot checks on their branches. The enforcement action follows repeated warnings from the CBN to financial institutions to guarantee seamless cash availability, particularly during periods of high demand.

Police uncover two gun manufacturing factories in Benue, arrest suspects

Operatives of the Benue State Police Command have uncovered two gun manufacturing factories in Guma and Kwande local government areas of the state.

This was disclosed in a statement released on Tuesday by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Steve Yabanet.

The CP noted that through credible information about criminals manufacturing arms at Mbaafa, Adikpo, Kwande LGA, detectives were deployed to the areas for investigation.

According to him, on January 11, police stormed a gun factory at Mbaafa and arrested one Friday Aduduakamve and Iorwashima Iornyume, aka AK-35.

The CP said that the operatives searched the factory and recovered nine fabricated pistols and one yet to be completed AK-47 rifle, amongst others.

He said that the team also uncovered another gun manufacturing factory in Daudu, Guma LGA, where more arms were recovered.

“As police detectives began intelligence gathering on criminal activities in Daudu, information was received that one Meme Ihoon, 50 years old, was responsible for all short arms being used by kidnappers, armed robbers, and cultists in Daudu.

“During the investigation, the said suspect was arrested on January 10; six dane guns and three long pipes used for fabricating guns were recovered from his house.

“The suspect confessed to having been producing and selling arms. Investigation is ongoing to arrest other criminals connected with the case,” the police spokesman said.

Welcoming guests to the presentation ceremony, Head of Quality, Air Peace Limited Engineer Patrick Achurefe, thanked the airline’s Chairman, Dr. Allen Ifechukwu Onyema, for his unwavering support throughout the rigorous audit process. “We are grateful to our chairman for believing in our capabilities and supporting the meticulous efforts required for this achievement”. He noted that Air Peace first earned its place on the IOSA registry in 2016, just two years after commencing operations. Since then, Air Peace has consistently met the stringent standards required to maintain this global recognition, achieving certifications in the years that followed. “I am elated that we did not disappoint, as the process managers involved in the audit demonstrated exceptional expertise and dedication”, he added.
Speaking at the event, Area Manager, West and Central Africa, IATA, Dr. Samson Fatokun commended Air Peace for being the pride of Nigeria. He noted the airline’s remarkable achievements in just a decade of its operations, insisting that it is not a mere fluke. “Air Peace’s presence on the IOSA registry is a testament to its unwavering dedication to safety, operational excellence, and professionalism. This milestone is not just a victory for the airline but a pride for Nigeria. It highlights that local carriers can operate at the highest international safety levels.”
While receiving the certificate, Chairman/CEO, Air Peace Limited, Dr. Allen Onyema expressed gratitude to the airline’s management team, who worked tirelessly to achieve this feat. “Today marks another significant milestone for our young and ambitious airline,” he said. He noted that the certification is an attestation to the hard work and dogged determination of the Board and Management of Air Peace in ensuring safety standards and just culture in the organization.
“This sixth IOSA certification is a testament to our commitment to global safety standards. It affirms that we are on the right track and provides our passengers with the confidence that their safety remains our top priority. I extend my heartfelt thanks to our management team and staff who have gone above and beyond to make this possible”, Dr. Onyema said.
Dr. Onyema also praised Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Hon. Festus Keyamo and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for implementing progressive policies that are transforming the aviation sector. “Under the guidance of Minister Keyamo, Nigeria’s signing of the Cape Town Convention has opened new opportunities for the aviation industry. This move will enhance the capacity of local airlines, reduce operational costs, and ultimately lead to more competitive airfares. I also appreciate IATA for its unwavering support for the industry and for ensuring that African airlines like Air Peace have a seat at the global table,” Onyema added.
Present at the ceremony at the airline’s corporate headquarters in Lagos were IATA’s Area Manager & Head of Account Management for West & Central Africa, Dr. Samson Fatokun, Air Peace’s top executives, including Director of Flight Operations, Captain Augustin Kamano; Head of Training, Captain Gerald Udaya; Safety Manager,  Captain Godfrey Ogbogu; Head, Corporate Communications, Dr Ejike Ndiulo; Cabin Services Manager, Ikwo Iyanam, Head of IT, James Bello, and Head of Sales and Business Development, Davids Odeyemi.
This sixth IOSA certification is a major achievement for Air Peace, reflecting its deep-rooted safety culture, robust management systems, and commitment to continuous improvement.
