House of Representatives has initiated an investigation into Alex Ikwechegh, a member representing the Abia North/South federal constituency of Abia State, following an incident involving an assault on Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver.
During a plenary session on Tuesday, the House referred Ikwechegh to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges after Julius Ihonvbere, the majority leader, raised a “point of privilege.”
Ikwechegh, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), gained media attention for slapping and verbally abusing Abuwatseya.
In a viral video, the confrontation is shown, with Ikwechegh accusing the driver of disrespect for requesting that he come closer to the vehicle to collect a package. This incident took place on October 27 in the Maitama district of Abuja.
Following the event, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) police command summoned Ikwechegh for questioning.
The lawmaker subsequently issued an apology to Abuwatseya and the Nigerian public, expressing regret for his behaviour.
During Tuesday’s session, majority leader Ihonvbere emphasised the importance of preserving the image of the parliament, noting that he had received numerous calls and messages regarding Ikwechegh’s actions.
Ikwechegh, acknowledging the situation, stated that his conduct was unwarranted, regardless of the provocation he felt.
Benjamin Kalu, the deputy speaker who oversaw the plenary, commented on Ikwechegh’s remorse, describing his apology as ’emotional and very touching’. Kalu indicated that although there were calls for Ikwechegh’s immediate suspension, he would instead face the committee for further review.
