I Am Set For The Movie Industry, To Tell Our Stories Our Own Way – Femi Davies

Media personality and Publisher of MetroNewsNg, Otunba Femi Davies is set to make a come back to the movie industry.
The well known Lagos based journalist,who has spent well over 25years transversing Lagos Television/Radio Lagos, Ogtv,Magnet Media,Oricom Advertising,Today’s Choice Magazine,Hearts Magazine,Ace Weekly,Global Excellence And City People Magazine,before serving under the government of Otunba Gbenga Daniel in Ogun State as Media Consultant to the governor and Director of Organization for Peoples Party Of Nigeria (PPN) before returning to his first love, journalism to berth Ultimate Magazine and later MetroNewsNg a digital news portal.
According to the Ogun State-born music/movie and events, promoter, his return to the movie industry is borne out of the realization that the industry is more sanitized now with the advent of social media tools and increment in avenues to recoup the money invested in the industry.
He opined that income from investments was hitherto limited to whatever the marketer was willing to pay coupled with pirates who were milking the industry dry.
With the advent of social media, producers can exhibit movies at various cinema halls spread across the country, organize professional premiers, enter into contracts with digital platforms, broadcast platforms and the likes to also make income.
He also raised the fact that the standard of productions including use of state of the art equipment is so encouraging now that good and quality standard is now the measurement and expectation across the industry unlike what obtains in the past.
To this end, he is set to produce movies which will hit the market from the end of the year and the first quarter of 2020.
Asked if he is quitting journalism for movie making, the very jovial and mentor to many journalists said “ As a graduate of Mass Communication, I’m rather going back to the part of what I studied which is the use of mass media to communicate to a large audience with the intent to cause positive changes. With the movies, I seek to entertain, educate, reorientate, and influence positive attitudes by positively projecting our culture and values. In one word, I will seek to tell our stories our own way, not the way foreigners want us to see ourselves”.
Otunba Femi Davies in the past was the brain behind notable Yoruba movies like “Owo Ale”, Ago Meje -7 ‘O Clock’, “Temi Ni Nkem”, “Pink Ladies”, “Alabarin”, “Mase Magbe” “2010 Odun Ayo Mi” shot in Suncity, South Africa amongst other movies.

He has managed top-rated acts like Sir Shina Peters, Wasiu Alabi Pasuma and promoted K1 D Ultimate, Adewale Ayuba, Wale Thompson, Dele Taiwo, Lanre Teriba, Musiliu Haruna Ishola, Q.Dot, Small Doctor, Remedies and a long list of others.
He is set to hit location for new sets of movie production from next month which incidentally is his birthday month.
The National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP) has conferred the
esteemed Fellow of Theatre Profession award upon Dr. Shaibu Husseini, Executive
Director/CEO of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB). NANTAP says the
award of Fellow of Theatre Arts (fta) was awarded to theatre practitioner, film journalist, culture
advocate and administrator in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the growth and
development of theatre practice in Nigeria.
The award ceremony took place on Sunday, February 22, at the Glover Hall, Lagos, and was
attended by distinguished personalities in the Nigerian culture, theatre and film industries
including the General Manager of National Theatre Tola Akerele, Culture activist and
programme chairman of Coalition For Relevant Arts (CORA) Jahman Anikulapo, Chairman of
the Body of Fellows of NANTAP Prof Duro Oni, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of
NANTAP and Chairman of Audio-Visual Rights Society of Nigeria (AVRS), Mahmood Ali-Balogun, Veteran actor
Norbert Young and the veteran actress Joke Silva Jacobs who was also honoured at the event.
NANTAP had noted in the citation read before the NFVCB ED was decorated that Dr. Shaibu
has made significant strides in promoting Nigerian dance, theatre and film, both locally and
internationally. NANTAP also acknowledged that Dr. Shaibu’s recent appointment as ED/CEO
of NFVCB has been instrumental in shaping the country's film industry.
The NFVCB boss thanked NANTAP for the prestigious honour and recognition which he
described as not just a personal recognition, but also a testament to the hard work, dedication and
passion of every individual who has contributed to the growth and development of theatre
practice in Nigeria, ‘’I am grateful, honoured and proud to be part of a community that has
consistently pushed the boundaries of creativity, innovation and excellence. Since the reward for
hard work is more work, I commit to continue working tirelessly to promote and advance the
cause of theatre and film arts in Nigeria’’ the ED said.
The Fellow of Theatre Profession award is the highest honor bestowed by NANTAP, recognizing
individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, creativity, and commitment to the
advancement of theatre arts in Nigeria. Those who were inducted into the body of fellows of
NANTAP alongside the NFVCB ED include Joke Silva Jacobs, Sam Uche- Anyamele and
Bolanle Austen-Peters.
