According to a story in the VANGUARD NEWSPAPER, Senator Ameh Ebute has declared his intention to succeed Senator Abdullahi Adamu as National Chairman of the APC. In a statement, the party praised Senator Ebute for his readiness to make personal sacrifices for the good of the party, comparing him to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with whom he had worked during Nigeria’s military rule. Senator Ebute’s choice to take a more active role in politics may have far-reaching consequences for the future of the ruling party.
Ameh Ebute, the past president of the Senate, has declared his intention to replace Senator Abdullahi Adamu as National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Adamu resigned from his position just a few days ago. According to a recent online post by VANGUARD NEWSPAPER, Senator Ebute has publicly declared that he is eager to stand up and take on the responsibility alongside President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as he did previously during the military administration in Nigeria.
While describing his efforts to restore democracy, he said, “My democratic experiences in bringing back democracy included reconvening the Senate in Lagos State in 1994, in the face of military invasion by asking General Sani Abacha, to handover power to Alhaji Moshood Abiola, who was the democratically elected President of the country.”
He claimed that as a result, the regime of General Sani Abacha arrested and held him alongside current Nigerian President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, GCFR, and they were both charged and tried for treasonable felony.
His words continued, “In 1994, when myself and Tinubu were at Alagbon prison and were to be executed, it was one thing saved us.” We spent more than 50 days in Alagbon. Our lives were spared only because General Sani Abacha passed away right before our scheduled execution.
Senator Ebute said Thursday night that he is willing to put party and country first, in a statement released at that time. He emphasised his willingness to play a key role in the political landscape again by recalling his cooperation with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through difficult times under the military rule.
According to the news story, Senator Ebute and others were able to make their voices heard within the APC after Senator Abdullahi Adamu resigned from his post as National Chairman. Senator Ebute is presenting himself as a candidate who is dedicated to the success of the party by highlighting his history of public service and his desire to continue serving his country.
