Retired Justice, Ogunbiyi Becomes Acting Chairman, Nigerian Police Service Commission After Musiliu Smith’s Resignation

Her appointment comes less than 24 hours after previous Inspector General of Police Musiliu Smith resigned. The ex-PSC Chairman was believed to have clashed with Force commanders over the recruitment process.

Justice Clara Ogunbiyi, a retired Supreme Court Justice, has been appointed Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC).

Her appointment comes less than 24 hours after previous Inspector General of Police Musiliu Smith resigned. The ex-PSC Chairman was believed to have clashed with Force commanders over the recruitment process.

SaharaReporters had reported that Musiliu Smith resigned from his position on Wednesday.

This came amid disagreement on which body between the commission and the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, should be responsible for the recruitment, promotion, and appointment of constables and officers.

The commission’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, confirmed the development in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

Until her nomination, Ogunbiyi was Commissioner 1 in the PSC and next in the hierarchy to the former chairman.

She will serve as acting PSC Chairperson until President Muhammadu Buhari appoints a new substantive chairman

Ani also disclosed that the PSC’s Joint Union Congress had called a halt to its walkout in order for the new management to investigate its demands.

He stated that Smith resigned by Schedule 2(4) subsection 2(2) of the Police Service Commission Establishment Act.
