It is no news that Politics in Nigeria has lost its dynamics as an increasing percentage of Nigerian political leaders do not know their primary responsibility hence has lost track of their roles as elected leaders. This is basically because most of them got into power with an ulterior motive and not with the sole purpose of serving the masses. A perfect analogy of such visionless leader who has tossed aside the sole responsibility of representing his people and giving them access to dividends of democracy is none other than Mr Kennedy Ibeh, a legislator under the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Obowu State Constituency in Imo State House of Assembly who has chosen to neglect the constituted roles and other meaningful projects and proceeded to erect a bet9ja shop in his constituency with the rationale of turning Obowu youths into chronic and reckless gamblers.
Kennedy Ibeh we learned has been in politics for a long time, as he was appointed a transition committee member for Obowu local government area back then in 2008, however, in 2010, he became a counselor taking after his father who once represented Okenanlogho Ward. He also served as a Special Assistant to Governor Rochas on Labour matters and was also a one-time Special Adviser on political matters in Owelle’s regime. We gathered that this joker of a political leader just recently commissioned the Bet9ja shop as part of his constituency project.
At a time when the society is working so hard to curb anti-social behaviors like reckless gambling among Nigerian youths, Kennedy Ibeh is promoting it as a project and goodwill to his constituency. Furthermore, it is alleged that Kennedy will indirectly be profiting from the Bet9ja Shop with the erection and commissioning of the shop a hoax to deceive and swindle gullible members of his constituency as he is by proxy a Bet9ja agent which entitles him to certain commissions from money made from the purported constituency project. With the allegations above, many indigenes are of the opinion that while this will breed more vices and lazy youths in the community who will cling on the opportunity to while away their time sitting from morning to night in a betting shop, it is also a ridicule and a big slap to the people of Obowu that in an era where other communities boast of meaningful project, what they can only boast of is a Bet9ja Shop in a “Batcher”.
